Macca: United Can Benefit From Ronaldo Sale

Steve McManaman has told Setanta Sports News that Cristiano Ronaldo’s proposed move to Real Madrid could prove to be a stunning piece of business for Manchester United.

A pursuit that has lasted over a year looks set to bear fruit for Real, after United confirmed they had accepted an £80 million offer for the Portugal star.

United fans are sure to lament the loss of Ronaldo given all he has brought to the club, but Setanta presenter and former Real star McManaman feels the transfer kitty could enable Sir Alex Ferguson to flood his side with top-class talent.

”I think £80m, Sir Alex will be going for the best around,” McManaman told Setanta Sports News. “There’s talk of Franck Ribery, he would probably cost £30m, there’s talk of Villa and Silva and he could go out and buy two, three, four world class players for the money they get in for Cristiano Ronaldo, so in reality it could be fantastic business for Sir Alex.

Sir Alex is brilliant at rebuilding sides. He has done it over the years so if you can get rid of one player and bring in four world-class players, it could be fantastic.

Ronaldo was the best player in the world last year and is one of the greatest players still and I can see him going to Real Madrid and being a massive success, but I think there comes a time when all the speculation does drag people down.

”It could be an inspired move for United in the end.”

Former Real Madrid star McManaman is convinced the move could result in Wayne Rooney taking on the mantle of talisman for United.

McManaman added: “For me he was starting to take away from Wayne Rooney’s game, Wayne was being pushed out wide. Wayne Rooney needs to be a centre forward and do his business and Cristiano was taking that away.

”I think Sir Alex feels that with £80m, he can get Wayne Rooney back up front and he can take Manchester United forward.”
