Luis Antonio Valencia to Demand Wigan Let Him Join Manchester United

Manchester United target Luis Antonio Valencia will demand that Wigan sell him this summer - or he will sit out his contract.

Ecuador star Valencia is desperate to go to Old Trafford but Latics are sticking to their £20million valuation, putting one of the big-money moves of the close-season at risk.

United are willing to splash out £17m, including bonuses, and do not want to pay over the odds for the talented right-winger who they know wants to join them.

Valencia is hoping a compromise is agreed by the weekend while he is playing in the World Cup for his homeland - or he could just let his Wigan deal run down instead.

The pacy wide man can leave Wigan next summer for a knockdown fee of around £6m which kicks in if the Lancashire outfit are relegated, a worrying possibility on the horizon.

Valencia has the alternative option of buying out the last year of his contract next summer, and his camp reveal he would be happy to wait until then if his dream move to United is blocked now.

United were originally offering Wigan a player in exchange - striker Fraizer Campbell - on loan for a year on top of the fee they proposed.

Wigan’s negotiators think that they should either get more cash or another United squad man, possibly young striker Danny Welbeck, for a season to make up their numbers.

Chief executives David Gill and Brenda Spencer are haggling over figures, but it may take the intervention of Wigan chairman Dave Whelan this week to get an agreement.

Real Madrid and two other clubs are waiting in the wings for Valencia. But the player is determined to join United, where he is convinced he can fulfil his potential.

Hull have been warned that their attempt to sign Campbell must not disrupt his preparations for the European Under-21 Championships.

The Tigers had a £6m bid accepted by United over the weekend for the forward, who has just 12 months left on his contract at Old Trafford.

But his people are still awaiting contact from Hull chairman Paul Duffen.

Campbell’s advisor and father Keith, is concerned that talk of a move to Phil Brown’s Tigers could have an adverse effect on his son’s form this summer.

Stuart Pearce’s men went out on penalties to Holland in the semi-finals of the competition in 2007 - but hope to go a stage further with Campbell’s goals.

"We want to make sure Fraizer concentrates on his football and that nothing gets in his way," said Keith Campbell.

"He’s away with England at the moment and wants to do well with them.

"Nobody has contacted me about his future yet and until that happens, he’s still a Manchester United player."
