McClair Backs Sale of Ronaldo

Brian McClair has backed Manchester United's decision to sell Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Red Devils youth director has been around Old Trafford for long enough to know there is unlikely to be a catastrophic fall from grace as a result of Ronaldo's exit.

While some pundits believe Ronaldo's £80million departure for Real Madrid, plus Carlos Tevez's decision to quit United after two productive seasons on a lease agreement with his adviser Kia Joorabchian, McClair is adopting a more pragmatic view.

"Manchester United have been here before," said McClair on his Championship Manager blog.

"Look back at the club's history.

"George Best, Eric Cantona and David Beckham have departed United in some shape or form and the club has continued to thrive and, in certain cases, gone on to bigger and better things.

"A club as big as United is going to have big players and players move on. That is a fact of football life.

"No one player is irreplaceable. Put it another way, nobody is bigger than the club. Selling Ronaldo to Real Madrid is good business."

While few supporters will lament the loss of Ronaldo's histrionics and many believe Wayne Rooney is more than capable of being the fulcrum of a new-look team, they will expect Sir Alex Ferguson to bring in some quality reinforcements with the world record fee Ronaldo commanded.

Antonio Valencia is due to let Wigan know at the end of this week whether he would prefer to join United or Real Madrid.

However, it already appears Franck Ribery's heart is set on the Bernabeu. Certainly the £40million-rated star would prefer to join the growing throng at Real than leave Bayern Munich for Barcelona, while noises coming out of Lyon continue to hint at Karim Benzema remaining in France for another season.

Reports in Spain have suggested Ferguson is ready to make a move for Sergio Aguero, who has forged such an impressive partnership with Diego Forlan at Atletico Madrid.

However, the success Forlan has enjoyed in La Liga compared to the lamentable time he endured at United, is a reminder of how tough South American strikers can find it in the Premier League, which must leave a sizeable question mark against the Argentina star.

Charlton: We've Had Ronaldo's Best Years

UNITED legend Sir Bobby Charlton believes Cristiano Ronaldo will eventually regret leaving Old Trafford.

The 71-year-old, who has spent more than half a century with his beloved Reds, is confident Sir Alex Ferguson will find a suitable replacement but thinks the £80m fee for the Portuguese superstar is 'vulgar.'

"It is an enormous amount of money and it sometimes seems a little bit vulgar," Charlton said on club business in Beijing where the Reds signed a five-year partnership deal with electronics brand Aigo.

"But nevertheless that is business, I am afraid. We have responsibilities as a company and to all the fans that support United and it was decided that Ronaldo could go.

"It's a lot of money. It seems crazy really, but the more money the players cost, the more the TV companies appear to be able to contribute.

"Ronaldo is a great player. I suppose in time, he will reflect and say the best time he ever had in football was when he was at United."

Charlton admits time will tell whether the sale of Ronaldo to Real Madrid was the right one.

He said: "There's been a little bit of soul-searching. We shall never know until the season starts. It's an enormous amount. We will make sure we will use it properly and the club will be better for it."

Ronaldo has scored 118 goals in 291 appearances since he joined United in 2003 but Charlton doesn't think he is irreplaceable.

"Instead of him? I'll have to leave that to Alex Ferguson. The manager is a great judge of the player," he said.

Brave

"He is very brave, he's very brave with his decisions, he's very decisive with his decisions, and that is why he's been a major success. Who the player will be I don't know, but they will be worthy of putting on the shirt for United.

"Ronaldo leaves us because as a young boy he always dreamt about playing for Real Madrid, so if he leaves us it is with our blessing.

"We are very grateful that he has scored goals, that he has played well, that he's contributed to the fame of United.

"He is a great player. He's been with us for five or six years and in that time he has improved beyond all recognition. But we have no divine rights, we talked him out of it for one year but he's gone and we move on."

United have already switched their attentions to finding Ronaldo's successor and making a dent in their £80m windfall.

Wigan's Antonio Valencia looks first on the shopping list although United will face competition from Real Madrid for him and for strike target Karim Benzema.

Latics chairman Dave Whelan said: "United definitely remain very interested in Valencia. I am expecting the transfer market to really rev up come next week when people return from holidays."

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has once again stated that the 21-year-old Benzema wants to stay at the Stade Gerland but accepts events could change.

"Karim has said that he wants to stay another year at Lyon," said Aulas who admitted he has been approached over a possible deal for the French hit-man.

"He's staying but I think that Kaka or Ronaldo imagined remaining with their respective clubs," he said.

Sir Alex Ferguson returns from his holiday in the South of France in the middle of next week and will be looking to get his plans in place quickly.

Firstly, he needs to know if Carlos Tevez will be staying or moving on - possibly to City.

I'm not Finished - Hargreaves

Owen Hargreaves has claimed he is not finished with football and the Manchester United ace has insisted he can play on.

The injury-prone England midfielder, who has made two league appearances this season, was not expected to be back in action until January 2010 after undergoing knee surgery last November.

But Hargreaves, who has made only 25 starts in two years since his big money move from Bayern Munich, has affirmed that he could be back playing for United in October.

The 28-year-old said: “I’m going to come back stronger and hopefully add a couple of years to my career.

“It’s been so frustrating. As an athlete and being so competitive, it’s hard to watch when you normally would be out there.”

Tevez to Leave United

CITY and Chelsea are leading the race for Carlos Tevez after he opted against signing a lucrative new deal at United because he “wasn’t the most wanted person” at Old Trafford, according to his advisor Kia Joorabchian.

United chief executive David Gill had been in discussions with Joorabchian, with the aim of keeping the popular Argentina forward.

But, despite the offer of a five-year contract that would have made Tevez one of the highest paid players at the club, the 25-year-old has decided to leave.

Tevez, according to Joorabchian, ruled out the prospect of moving to Liverpool as a mark of respect to United fans, but appears interested in the possibility of joining City or Chelsea.

Joorabchian told TalkSport: “We ruled Liverpool out because of the competitive nature of Manchester United and Liverpool.

“He has a lot of respect and a lot of love for the fans of Man United and I think he would rule Liverpool out as being the biggest competitor.

“City and Chelsea probably would be the two clubs that are on the table.

Contact

“City have obviously been in contact with us. I’ve spoken to (City executive chairman) Garry (Cook) and to (manager) Mark (Hughes) on several occasions.

“We haven’t talked to them about a contract, we haven’t talked to Chelsea either about that because we’ve respected the fact that Carlos is a Manchester United player.

“Without getting into the point of whether he’s going to City or Chelsea or wherever, the issue is that I think Carlos wants to go to a club which has real ambition, a club which is showing intent, a club which he can help achieve great things.

“City have shown a lot of ambition with the players they’ve brought in in the last year or so, and Chelsea are also showing a lot of ambition - they want to win the Champions League. Both have that ambition.

“What is important is Carlos is very happy in England. He’s extremely settled down, his family is in very good shape here, they love the country. He wants to stay here.

“He’s basically given away with the two European clubs that have come to him. He hasn’t totally disregarded the option but he’s put it down his pecking order and I think he’d want to stay in the Premier League.”

Joorabchian insisted the decision to reject a five-year deal at Old Trafford was not down to money so much as the fact United left it so late to put an offer on the table.

He said: “I don’t think it’s correct to say ’his face doesn’t fit’. He was very much a part of the Manchester United team the last two years but clearly the last one year he’s been very disappointed.

“I think he’s been even more disappointed that it has to come to the fact that the loan deal finishes.

“If it was, let’s say, Wayne Rooney’s contract finishing six months before, or Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract finishing six months before, would they have offered a better deal to them at that time or would they have tried to secure their services a bit sooner?

“He has that little bit of a feeling that maybe he wasn’t the most wanted person at United. Rightly or wrongly, that’s how he feels.

“I personally think United made a fantastic contribution to try to secure him with a last-ditch offer but I think it was a little bit too late and there wasn’t enough time for Carlos to think about it.”

Joorabchian admitted his client would be leaving Old Trafford with a heavy heart.

“I think Carlos is not happy, he’s a little bit sad,” he said.

“He’s had two years at club and enjoyed two great years. They’ve won two Premier League titles, one Champions League title, one Carling Cup in his time and he’s quite sad.

“They didn’t really give him any offers for two years. Over the duration of two years there was a lot of talk about signing him but we never actually got to the point of actually receiving any offers for him.

“The offer of Manchester United was a very good offer. It came about 10 days ago. It was the loan price of £9million plus the final option price of £25.5million. They made him a good contract but Carlos needed time.

Contact

“I want to make it very, very clear: we never ever at any time asked them for more money, or any kind of money - never at any point during the last two years.

“Even after they made their offer we never asked for more money. We never spoke about that. I think Carlos just felt over the last two years they hadn’t made the effort to sign him and he needed a little bit of time.

“I think they were under a time restraint with all the situation that was going on and we couldn’t get there in time.”

Tevez will now take some time to consider his options, with Joorabchian expecting a decision to be known by the first week in July.

And there will be no future issues with who owns the player’s rights, with the next deal set to be a permanent one.

Joorabchian added: “The Premier League have changed their rules now when you do make a transfer it has to be a permanent transfer. All his rights will be sold, all his economical rights will be sold and he will belong to the club that he will play for.

“Pre-season will start somewhere between 9 and 12 July. He will have to start wherever he starts by 11, 12 July.

“So, by the first week of July, there will be a decision made, a contract signed and a club announced.”

No Campbell Decision

Manchester United striker Fraizer Campbell has reiterated he has not made a decision on his future and will wait until the end of the European Under 21 Championship before considering his options.

Campbell is currently with the Under 21 squad in Sweden, but Hull City are waiting for the chance to speak to the youngster.

Hull, where the forward spent most of the 2007/08 season on loan, have had an offer accepted by United and hope to convince Campbell to return to the KC Stadium.

Newcastle United have also been linked with a bid for the 21-year-old, who endured a frustrating spell on loan at Tottenham Hotspur last term.

However, the impending departures of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez have prompted rumours that Campbell could be offered a lifeline at Old Trafford.

Campbell, though, is keen to put his club future on the backburner as he concentrates on England's quest to become European Under 21 champions.

"I just want to play football here at the minute and concentrate on England's tournament," said Campbell on Sky Sports News.

"All that stuff can be sorted out when I'm done here and have had my holiday.

"I've decided that I'm just going to concentrate on England's football."

Tigers Close in On Campbell

Fraizer Campbell’s move to Hull is edging closer, according to Tigers chairman Paul Duffen.

Hull agreed a £6 million fee with Campbell’s club Manchester United last week and were granted permission to speak to the 21-year-old.

Campbell, who is currently in Sweden with the England Under-21s for the European Championships, enjoyed a successful loan spell at the KC Stadium during the 2007-2008 season.

Reports last week claimed the move was in jeopardy due to complications involving the final year of his contract with United.

But Duffen insists Campbell is determined to secure a return to the club and is hopeful of making rapid progress.

He said: "We are in negotiations with Fraizer's advisors and we have got probably as far as we can for the time being.

"There may be some issues they need to finalise with his former club and that's something we can't get involved in.

"We need to do what we can do and wait to see what happens in the fullness of time.

"He is busy now playing in the European Under-21 Championship.

"We are in touch with his advisors and hopefully we can progress things shortly.

"The important thing is we get Fraizer Campbell at Hull City because we are the club he wants to play for."

Silva Unfazed by United Talk

Valencia winger David Silva insists he is thinking only about Spain’s Confederations Cup bid, despite speculation that he could be a target for a Manchester United side on the lookout for a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 23-year-old, who has also been linked with Real Madrid, is in South Africa for his team’s tilt at the Confederations Cup and came off the substitutes’ bench in Spain’s 5-0 drubbing of New Zealand.

The competition is Silva’s sole focus, with the winger happy to let his future be debated by the rumour-mongers rather than let himself become embroiled in the speculation.

“The Spanish national team is for me the most important thing,” said Silva.

“I want to speak about the present, about the future we will see. I’m only thinking about the national team.”

Carlos Tevez is Feed up with Manchester United and Will Not Return Next Season

Carlos Tevez has informed Sir Alex Ferguson that he has no plans to return to Manchester United despite the club's renewed efforts to persuade him to reject Manchester City's overtures.

Ferguson has interrupted his holiday in the south of France several times over the past two weeks to ring Tevez and appeal to him to think carefully about the consequences of leaving a club of United's standing, but the Argentinian has now told the manager that he planned to sever his ties with the Premier League champions.

That is unlikely to prevent Ferguson trying to persuade him from changing his mind before the striker officially becomes a free agent on 30 June, but United's management are realistic about the situation and increasingly fear that Tevez will soon confirm he is following Cristiano Ronaldo out of the club.

City have offered Tevez a 75% pay rise, meaning a £140,000-a-week salary, and the chance to re-establish himself as a first-choice player, whereas, tellingly, in all the various discussions with Ferguson there has been no indication from the manager Tevez can expect to play in more of United's key games this season.

Tevez's main grievance is the frequency with which he was left out of United's bigger matches last season and he has come to feel disenchanted because of the way the club's chief executive, David Gill, has handled his proposed signing, repeatedly postponing talks before publicly stating that he thought Tevez was over-priced. That has left the way clear for City to capitalise and, unless Ferguson can convince Tevez otherwise, the Abu Dhabi-owned club confidently expect to pull off one of their biggest transfer coups of modern times despite Liverpool also maintaining their own interest in Tevez.

City have the advantage because they can afford to pay Tevez the higher salary and have informed the consortium that owns the player's economic rights they will pay the £25.5m fee in one sum whereas Liverpool's proposal is to drag it out with instalments over the course of his contract.

Tevez is also aware that moving to Anfield would irreparably tarnish his standing among those United supporters who have been campaigning for him to stay at Old Trafford. The player is described as "tribal" and is aware of the intense rivalry between United and Liverpool but, in his mind, he does not believe it would cause so much bad feeling if he went to City.

Cristiano Ronaldo Transfer: Manchester United Nothing Without Him, Says Fabregas

Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas has branded Manchester United a "one man team" and said they will struggle to achieve anything when Cristiano Ronaldo moves to Real Madrid.

The 22-year-old said United's success over the past two seasons was entirely down to the talent and contributions of Ronaldo.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side have won back-to-back Premier league titles, the Champions league, the Carling Cup and the Club World Cup, and despite fielding what he claims to be his strongest ever squad, Fabregas is adamant that without the Portuguese winger, none of these titles would have gone United's way.

"He is such a good player and very difficult to stop," Fabregas told the Star. "Ronaldo won the last two leagues on his own."

United may well struggle to replace Ronaldo this summer. The 24-year-old has been the club's top scorer for the last two seasons, and his absence, Fabregas says, is a huge advantage to the champion's closest rivals.

"The truth is it [Ronaldo's move to Real] is a big piece of luck for the rest of us that he is gone," he continued. "It will be one problems less for us to deal with next season.

"We had our ups and downs on the pitch but I got on well with him and I am sure he will do big things next season alongside Kaka."

Speculation over who Ferguson will bring in to replace Ronaldo has been rife since the world record £80 million transfer was announced last week.

With Carlos Tevez looking likely to make his Old Trafford exit, the club have been linked with Wigan's Antonio Valencia, Bayern Munich's Franck Ribery, Valencia's David Villa and Lyon's Karim Benzema.

In the final weeks of last season, Tevez made public his frustrations over missing out on big games for United.

With Ronaldo's departure it is plausible that the Argentina forward would be given more opportunity at the club, but reports suggest a move to Manchester City is the most likely outcome.

City are in a position to pay the £25.5 million asking price to Tevez's owners in one payment and have reportedly offered the 25-year-old a contract worth £140-000-a-week - a 75 per cent increase on his current salary.

Man Utd Approach Brazilian Sensation

Douglas Costa has been contacted by Manchester United, with a view to filling Cristiano Ronaldo’s boots, his agent has claimed.

The Brazilian’s representative, Cesar Bottega, has affirmed that The Red Devils, who are searching for a replacement for Ronaldo, are keeping a close watch on Gremio star Costa.

A host of clubs are fighting to secure the flying winger’s services, with United on the list of potential suitors, Bottega has claimed.

The spectacular Brazilian league starlet is seen as Ronaldinho’s successor in his homeland, and the promising attacker could seal a move to Old Trafford this summer according to Bottega.

“They [Manchester United] have identified four or five possible replacements for Cristiano Ronaldo in the world, and Douglas is one of them,” Bottega told Radio Gaucha.

“We have been contacted by several clubs some time ago, including Manchester [United], but by South American ones as well.”

Park Eyes Last World Cup

Immediately after helping South Korea to their seventh successive World Cup finals, Park Ji-Sung announced that the tournament will probably be his last.

The 28-year-old captained his country to a 2-0 away win against the United Arab Emirates last week to seal their place in South Africa 2010 with a game to spare.

The Manchester United winger is a veteran of two World Cups having shot onto the scene at the 2002 finals where the hosts reached the semi-finals under Guus Hiddink.

South Korea followed that unexpected success with a respectable last-16 place in Germany in 2006 but Park admits the finals next summer will probably be his last.

"2010 will likely be my last World Cup," he said.

"There is also the 2014 event but I don't think my stamina will last until then. I will devote everything to attain a good result."

Similarities

Park underlined that getting to the last 16 again in South Africa would signify a realistic aim but the former PSV man did go as far as comparing the current crop of stars with the heroes of 2002.

"The 2002 Korean team was the strongest ever and younger and veteran players achieved good harmony," he added.

"The national team for next year's event is quite similar to that in 2002. Depending on how thoroughly we prepare for the event, we can attain a good result."

Manchester United target £45m David Villa

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will reportedly offer Valencia £45 million for striker David Villa following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Villa, the Spain striker, is expected to leave Valencia this summer due to crippling financial problems at the Mestalla.

And the Mirror claims Ferguson hopes to spend a large chunk of the £80 million United will receive for Ronaldo on Villa, the leading scorer at Euro 2008.

Should United land Villa, the fee would break the British transfer record set when Robinho moved to Manchester City last summer.

However, United will face fierce competition from Madrid, who announced last week that Villa would join Kaka and Ronaldo at the Bernabeu.

Chelsea had been monitoring Villa's situation at Valencia, with the Spanish club under pressure to strip their prized assets as they lumber under debts of around £400 million, but the former Sporting Gijon forward has always made clear his preference for staying in Spain.

Valencia are thought to have turned down an inquiry from Chelsea for the striker last week.

Tevez Talks to Begin

Sky Sports News understands that talks will begin with all interested parties hoping to sign Carlos Tevez on Monday and Tuesday.

Representatives of the Argentina striker will hold discussions with four clubs in the Premier League - Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea.

Reports also suggest that one club in Italy and one in Spain are interested, although the Primera Liga side is not thought to be Real Madrid.

It is understood that Tevez himself will announce that he would prefer to stay in the Premier League.

The 25-year-old joined United on loan in 2007, but that deal expires at the end of June and speculation has suggested that the forward is ready to turn his back on Old Trafford.

Conjecture has implied that Tevez could view City as his preferred destination, with rumour suggesting the Eastlands outfit are prepared to offer a deal worth in the region of £140,000-a-week.

Neville Wants to Stay At United

Gary Neville is determined to battle for his place at Manchester United despite increased competition for first-team football.

The England international has struggled with injuries over the past two seasons and has seen his opportunities limited.

Wes Brown, John O'Shea and Rafael Da Silva are all options for Sir Alex Ferguson at right-back, with O'Shea getting the nod in the Champions League final.

Neville has even been linked with a shock move away from Old Trafford, with Middlesbrough considering a bid for his services, but the veteran is keen to stay with the Premier League champions.

The defender admits he has had to change his game in recent years and accepts he may not be able to offer the same attacking threat as some of his team-mates.

He told the People: "I played a good number of games last season and I hope that continues next season because playing for this club is as special to me now as it was when I first pulled on the shirt as a schoolboy.

"Full-backs have an important role, particularly at United, in terms of the way we attack and the way in which there's a transition from defence through our full-backs to attack.

"We have always set up play and been part of the extra-man situation and we always play with width.

"The way you see guys like Patrice Evra and Rafael Da Silva attacking, they are more like wingers who can defend - they aren't just full-backs any more.

"The way in which the modern full-back like Rafael, his brother Fabio and Patrice play is fantastic to watch. Before I got injured a couple of years ago you'd say I was running forward nearly all the time during the game.

"Don't get me wrong - I don't do that in the same eye-catching way as they do, but you understand the changes and development in the game and the way I've had to adapt."

Udinese Warn United Off Sanchez

Udinese have warned Manchester United that any offer for Alexis Sanchez will fall on deaf ears.

The Red Devils have been linked with a bid for the Chilean winger in sections of the press, but Udinese claim there has been no contact.

Udinese president Sergio Gasparin says Sanchez is tied to a long-term deal and will not welcome any approach for a player he classes as pivotal to their thinking.

”Alexis Sanchez is not for sale,” Gasparin told Antenna 3.

”From a technical standpoint, this player means a lot to us.

”He has a four-year contract with Udinese and there is no contact with Manchester United.

”We do not have any intention of selling Alexis.”

Manchester United's Nemanja Vidic insists he is staying at Old Trafford

The 27-year-old centre-back has been linked with a £25 million move away from the Premier League champions, and Barcelona are expected to table a bid in the next few days.

With Cristiano Ronaldo set to complete an £80m move to Real Madrid this summer, the loss of the another influential player would have proved a real blow for manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Vidic's wife, Ana, reportedly wants to leave Manchester because of the weather. However, Vidic told the News of the World: "I am very happy here and next season we will start again. I have got no desire to go anywhere.

"People forget that when you join a new league you don't just have to adjust to the country, you also have to adjust to the style of football.

"I feel my game is well adjusted to England now and I want to play a part in a successful team next season. United can make it a record four titles in a row next year.

"I've started to understand and love all the things you English love. Now I even love a bacon sandwich."

Meanwhile, the News of the World also reports that United's hopes of signing Franck Ribery have taken another blow after Real told the Frenchman to wait one more year at Bayern Munich and then they will bring him to the Bernabeu.

Ferguson sees Ribery as the ideal replacement for Ronaldo, but it appears Real is the midfielder's prefered destination and even Zinedine Zidane - a former Madrid player who is still involved with the club - has told him that a switch to Spain is his best option.

Rooney Wants to Revert to Forward Role

Wayne Rooney has already stated his desire to capitalise on Cristiano Ronaldo’s proposed exit from Old Trafford, by expressing his displeasure at being forced to play on the wing.

Ronaldo’s deployment as a striker has seen Rooney pushed wide by Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, but the Portuguese star’s imminent £80m move to Real Madrid means the Englishman is likely to revert to his preferred role.

Rooney has been used as an out-and-out striker for England by Fabio Capello, and his return of eight goals in World Cup qualifying to date has quantified his comfort in the position.

Now, Rooney has stated his case for being used in the same capacity once more for United.

"The position I play for England is the one I most like to play in," said Rooney. "I've not played that for a while at United.

"It's the manager's choice but I have always said that my best position is up front. When you're playing out on the left you have responsibilities in terms of defending.

"That does take some of your energy away when you're attacking. With England you don't have to get back so much. It's a team game and I love playing for the team, but maybe I have to try to be more selfish in where I want to play and what role I want to play."

Cristiano Ronaldo Would Consider A Return to Manchester United from Real Madrid

When Cristiano Ronaldo was a young boy his father, the kitman for his amateur team on the Portuguese island of Madeira, told his son that in the future he would play for Real Madrid.

It is a prophecy that has stuck with Ronaldo, obsessed him and, later this week, it will come to fruition when he signs a contract that The Sunday Telegraph understands will be worth €13million (£11 million) a season, adding up to €78million (£66 million) over six years.

That contract will be historic in itself, the most lucrative in football. However, that is secondary to Ronaldo's real ambition: not only to fulfil his father's dream of pulling on Real's famous white shirt but to prove himself capable of conquering Spanish football as he did the English game.

"There is a big difference between Cristiano and some other players," explained a source close to him. "With some players they change their mind every year. Now I want Barcelona, now I want Inter and so on. But with Cristiano it was always Real Madrid. Their difficulties in recent times on the pitch did not matter and he remained true to what he had always wanted. He has always wanted to play at Real Madrid. He never spoke about another club.

"There have only ever been two clubs for Cristiano: Manchester United and Real Madrid. Manchester United is a club that will always be in Cristiano's heart. He has had six good years there and now feels ready for a new challenge. But he is still only 24 and has a long future in football and would like to come back to Manchester later in his career. If he leaves Real Madrid, he can only imagine doing so to return to Manchester United."

For that to happen Sir Alex Ferguson would have to break with precedent – he has never re-signed a big-name player who has left Old Trafford. But the United manager has always been a staunch defender of Ronaldo, both in public and in private, and it raises an intriguing possibility for the Portugal international, should things fail to work out as planned in Spain.

Ronaldo has come close twice before to leaving for Real Madrid, in the summer of 2006 and last summer. On both occasions he was dissuaded by the combination of the caution of his trusted agent Jorge Mendes and the persuasive powers of Ferguson. In terms of the success he has enjoyed in the last two seasons at the club – one Champions League, two Premier Leagues and the FIFA world player of the year award – that advice clearly proved sound.

The first time he came close to leaving was in the aftermath of the 2006 World Cup. That was entirely down to the public vitriol which greeted his perceived role in getting Wayne Rooney sent off in England's defeat to Portugal in the quarter-finals of the competition. With the game finely poised, Rooney stamped on Ricardo Carvalho and in the subsequent scuffle, Ronaldo's protestations – and infamous wink – were seen as crucial to having his Manchester United team-mate sent off. England went out and the country sought its scapegoat.

So fierce was the public reaction that Ronaldo sought escape, with Madrid the natural bolt hole. Manchester United rallied round him, though, and, feeling that security, he played his way out of it. "He may look like he doesn't care," said a close friend, "but believe me he found that very hard. Every stadium he went to he felt like the No 1 most hated person in the country."

Fast forward two remarkable seasons and Ronaldo was again on the brink of moving to the Bernabeu. In April 2007 he had signed a five-year contract worth £120,000 per week and he was turning in performances of astonishing brilliance. Throughout the 2007-08 season he was unstoppable: 42 goals as United achieved that incredible Premier League and Champions League double.

On the flight back from Moscow, with Chelsea having been vanquished on penalties, Ronaldo was strangely ruminative and laconic. It soon became evident as to why he was so uncharacteristically sombre. In his head he was leaving and soon after returning to Manchester he made it clear to Spanish journalists that he wanted to move to Real Madrid.

"He made a big mistake," said a source in Portugal who is close to Ronaldo's advisers. "He was maybe a bit naive. He thought that now, after five years, and having won everything, Manchester United would let him leave. Of course it was much more complicated than that."

That Ronaldo ended up staying at Old Trafford was largely down to Ferguson's proactive and direct approach. The Scot has a strong bond with Ronaldo, whose courage and professionalism he openly admires. The United manager flew out to Portugal and, together with Mendes, managed, in an intense four-hour meeting, to persuade Ronaldo that he should spend at least another year at United. Despite reports of pre-contractual agreements, no formal arrangement was made for him to leave this summer. However, Ronaldo was told that, if he was still determined to move in the next two years, and Real Madrid made a bid that United were happy with, then he would be allowed to leave. And this, of course, is what happened.

Negotiations between all parties were amicable. Ronaldo is eager not to burn his bridges with United, and did not want to be drawn into a repeat of what he now acknowledges was a poor way of handling himself last summer.

What helped facilitate the relative smoothness of the deal was Florentino Perez's relationship with Manchester United. The Real Madrid president earned United's respect for his conduct in signing David Beckham from them in the summer of 2003, in his previous stint as president of the club. Under his predecessor, Roman Calderon, relations had deteriorated to the extent that Ferguson famously said he "would not sell them a virus". Indeed, Calderon has been busy in the last 48 hours trying to claim Perez had merely capitalised on a deal he had set up himself but this is only an attempt to claw back some political credibility in Madrid. Calderon failed to sign any of his major targets while president of the club and, embarrassingly for him, Perez has signed his top two, Ronaldo and Kaka, within a fortnight of taking up his position. His claims to have laid the foundations for this deal are mere bluster.

While the formalities were conducted swiftly – two hours from when the official faxed offer was sent to United accepting – the deal was weeks in the making. When it became evident that Perez was going to return as president, United expected an approach. According to some reports, Ferguson was told on the night of the Champions League final in Rome that Real Madrid were coming back in for Ronaldo. Throughout the season, Ronaldo had agreed to focus exclusively on winning as much as possible with United, trying to avoid talk of his future in the media. But in the aftermath of that defeat in Rome it became clear that he wanted a fresh challenge. Of course United did not want to sell but with Ronaldo's determination to play in the white shirt as strong as ever a deal was struck directly. And a boyhood dream was realised.

He should enjoy it while it lasts because this is the calm before the storm. Despite Manchester United's global profile, their players are protected and their privacy guarded. The secluded Carrington training complex is the club in microcosm. Madrid will be different. Ronaldo will have 300 journalists chasing him around, 24 hours a day. There are 20 radio stations in the city alone that will be desperate for every second of his time and he will not be afforded the protection he has received in England. Enjoying relative anonymity in Los Angeles not even this most imaginative of players can have any idea what awaits him in the febrile atmosphere of the Spanish capital. Questions will be asked, accusations flung. As ever, he will deliver his answers on the pitch.

Ronaldo Happy To be Hated

Read Madrid-bound Cristiano Ronaldo has claimed that he enjoys being singled out for abuse by opposition supporters.

Manchester United have accepted a world record £80million transfer fee from Real which will see the Portuguese phenomenon switch to Spain this summer once personal terms are agreed.

Ronaldo flourished in the wake of the 2006 World Cup, when he was targeted by opposition fans in the Premier League angry at his reaction to Wayne Rooney's red card in England's quarter-final defeat by Portugal.

The gifted forward, who appears to be never out of the spotlight, believes that for every fan who jeers him, there are more who appreciate his talents.

Insults

Ronaldo told French football magazine So Foot: "I love it when people jeer me. I love to see the hate in their eyes, to hear the insults. It doesn't bother me.

"It's true lots of people hate me but there are even more who love me and who support me.

"I feel bad only when I play badly. Fortunately, that happens rarely."

Ronaldo has set his sights on carving his name into the football history books and will not rest of what he has already achieved at Old Trafford.

He added: "I still have a long way to go. I really want to re-write the history of football.

"I an aware I'm already among the best of the best but I want to continue to write many more beautiful pages."

Ferguson

The former Sporting Lisbon ace will come up against Barcelona star Lionel Messi on a regular basis in Spain, with the Argentina ace winning their personal duel in this summer's UEFA Champions League final.

But Ronaldo said: "I have nothing to envy Lionel for. I don't compare myself to others. I am Cristiano Ronaldo - and I can win more medals than anybody else.

"I don't like to relax. The fans want see a great Cristiano Ronaldo so I try to never disappoint."

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted that once it became clear Ronaldo was keen to join Real, there was little they could do to stand in his way.

Ferguson told the Mail on Sunday: "He wanted to leave, it's as simple as that.

"He was going to go for some time. We've done well to keep him for so long."

David Silva Targetted by Manchester United

Manchester United have added Spain's David Silva to their list of targets as they look to reinvest the £80million they will get from Cristiano Ronaldo's transfer to Real Madrid.

Bayern Munich's Franck Ribery and Wigan's Antonio Valencia remain at the top of manager Sir Alex Ferguson's attacking wish list, though he is set to miss out on Carlos Tevez.

But Ferguson is keen to reinforce his midfield and prepare for the day when Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs retire.

Sources in Spain claim Ferguson has identified the quick, inventive 23-year-old Silva as the man to fit the bill. At £25m, the price would be right too.

Silva's club Valencia, are in dire financial straits and desperate for cash. Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has long coveted Silva, but the Anfield club could not compete against United in a bidding war.

United know they will have to pay a premium for the other players they are chasing.

They believe Frenchman Ribery has the dynamic qualities to bring a new dimension to their game, but the asking price is £50m and rising. Ferguson had hoped to sign Valencia for £16m, but Real Madrid were prepared to go up to £22m before they signed Ronaldo and Wigan insist that is a more realistic valuation.

But Gerard Pique, a former team-mate of Ronaldo at Old Trafford, is confident Sir Alex Ferguson will spend the Ronaldo fee wisely.

Barcelona star Pique, set to start for Spain tonight in the Confederations Cup against New Zealand, said: "I am confident Sir Alex Ferguson will use the money to create a new project.

"United supporters can be totally secure that he will sign not just one but several important players and rebuild his team to go on winning titles and trophies."

But Pique warned Real: "Not that we're worried at Barcelona. We have a winning team. I'd rather be in our position than theirs."

Fergie Linked With Torres Move

Sir Alex Ferguson has been linked with a £40m move for Liverpool striker Fernando Torres.

The Sunday Express describe it as an 'audacious raid' but that could well be underplaying the ramifications of a move that would shake football.

Rafa Benitez would of course resist any attempt to lure Torres away from Anfield, but a British record bid could persuade Liverpool's cash-strapped owners.

The newspaper offers no evidence or quotes so the story should be taken with a large pinch of salt, but the very mention of Torres moving to United will be enough to incense Liverpool fans.

United continue to be linked with much more sensible targets, like Lyon's Karim Benzema, Barcelona's Samuel Eto'o, Atletico Madrid's Sergio Aguero, Bayern Munich's Franck Ribery and Valencia's David Silva.

Carlos Tevez to Sign for Manchester City After Agreeing £140,000 a Week Deal

Carlos Tevez is ready to stun Manchester United and sign for arch-rivals City.

The Argentine international will switch loyalties at the end of this month when his two-year loan at Old Trafford expires.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson contacted Tevez during last week to try to persuade him to stay with United. Old Trafford insiders fear that approach has failed. Fergie made the call on the eve of the announcement that United had agreed to sell Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid in a world record £80million deal.

Tevez was in Quito, Ecuador, on international duty with Argentina. He intends to take a family holiday and then accept a £140,000-a-week deal with City that dwarfs the contract offered by United.

It will be a bitter blow to United fans, who acclaimed the striker's hard-working style.

Liverpool have also made a late move in the Tevez race.

But their hopes of spreading a £25m deal over fouryears will not appeal to businessman Kia Joorabchian, who retains ownership of the player at the moment.

Joorabchian has a solid working relationship with City manager Mark Hughes. And the City boss said: "I admire Tevez as a player and I like the way he approaches the game of football - that's been recognised by most managers."

Hughes also insists his two Brazil internationals - Robinho and Elano - are staying at Eastlands. Robinho, signed from Real Madrid for a British record £32.5m, has hinted at a switch to Barcelona, while Elano has been linked with Inter Milan.

Hughes said: "Robinho says he's happy and wants to stay here and Elano is contracted for another two years."

United: We'll Spend Big

UNITED are poised to start splashing out some of their £80m Ronaldo windfall by swooping for Wigan winger Antonio Valencia.

And, according to the Glazers, he won't be the only world-class player coming to Old Trafford.

The club's owners on Friday released a rare statement to allay Reds fans' fears that the money from the world-record transfer of Ronaldo to Real Madrid would be used to pay back some of the debt hanging over United.

"Only the paranoia of some supporters would lead you to believe the owners are not going to continue investing in the team," read the statement.

"A substantial number of world-class players have been brought to the club in the past few years and that will still be the case.

"Sir Alex Ferguson is in total control of his squad. He is empowered to make whatever decisions he thinks are in the best interests of Manchester United. That continues to be the case.

"The fact is Cristiano Ronaldo decided, after six years, that it was time to move on and the manager said OK.

"The idea that United are motivated by a debt burden is just not true. It is not an issue."

Although Fergie is on holiday, he is keen to seal a deal for Valencia (pictured), with Wigan chairman Dave Whelan admitting it could be done in the next week.

"United have been in touch with us and we will be starting negotiations very shortly, I would imagine," said Whelan.

Develop

"I think they were waiting to see whether Ronaldo went to Spain. Things will develop over the next seven to 14 days.

"Sir Alex had him watched practically every match last year. He has got a very strong interest in him.

"We are not desperate to sell Antonio. If I can keep that lad, I'm going to keep him. He is a brilliant player. But I would never stand in the way of a footballer who can go to bigger and better clubs, and you can't get bigger and better than United.

"If Antonio says to me: `Mr Chairman, I want to go to United' and we get the right fee - the deal will be done."

A verbal offer of £16m is already understood to have been lodged by United, but Real Madrid are also keen on the 23-year-old.

Meanwhile, another summer target, Franck Ribery, will cost the Reds around three times as much, with his Bayern Munich general manager Uli Hoeness saying: "We will only negotiate under certain conditions. Namely, when another club does something crazy."

Meanwhile, Roma striker Mirko Vucinic insists he wants to remain at the Stadio Olimpico despite reported interest from United.

Speculation has been rife that Vucinic is one of the players United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is considering as a replacement for Real Madrid bound Cristiano Ronaldo.

Reports in Italy suggest informal contact has been made between the clubs for the Montenegro forward but Vucinic, who recently signed a new four-year deal, is happy to stay at the capital club.

“It’s certainly pleasing that a great club like that are interested in me,” he told Corriere dello Sport. “But I have only heard about it from the newspapers.

“At the moment I’m only thinking about relaxing by the seaside with my family.
“I’ve just signed a new contract and I’d like to stay at Roma.”

Boro Look to Nab Neville

Skysports.com understands Middlesbrough have made an audacious approach for Gary Neville.

Boro boss Gareth Southgate is keen to add some experienced heads to his squad as the North East outfit prepare for life in the Championship next term.

Manchester United veteran Neville certainly fits that bill, having won just about every major honour during his time at Old Trafford.

The 34-year-old full-back, who can also boast 85 England caps on an impressive CV, has been a fixture in the Red Devils' rearguard for 17 years, but could be tempted by a fresh challenge at the Riverside Stadium.

He has seen the last two seasons virtually written off through injury, while the likes of Wes Brown and Rafael are now regarded as long-term options at full-back for United.

With that in mind, Neville may welcome the opportunity to prolong his career in the Championship, while helping Boro's efforts to bounce back into the top flight at the first time of asking.

Initial contact is believed to have been made and it now remains to be seen whether United are willing to do business, or whether Southgate can persuade his former England team-mate to swap life at the reigning Premier League champions for that in the second tier.

Should Neville head to Teesside, though, he could be joined by fellow United stalwart Paul Scholes, with Boro also reported to be keen on the ex-England international midfielder.

Fergie: Ron Was Always Going to Leave

Sir Alex Ferguson believes Manchester United did well to keep Cristiano Ronaldo at Old Trafford for as long as they did before finally succumbing to Real Madrid's advances.

United's acceptance of Madrid's £80million bid for the Portugal playmaker earlier this week brought an end to one of the longest-running transfer sagas of recent years.

Ronaldo's desire to leave the reigning three-time Barclays Premier League champions had become all too apparent in recent months, and Ferguson insists it was out of the question to expect the player to stay any longer.

"He wanted to leave, it's as simple as that," Ferguson told The Mail on Sunday.

"He was going to go some time.

"We've done well to keep him for so long."

Madrid's record swoop for the FIFA World Player of the Year is set to be concluded by June 30.

Vucinic Shrugs Off United Rumours

Roma striker Mirko Vucinic insists he wants to remain at the Stadio Olimpico despite reported interest from Manchester United.

"It's certainly pleasing that a great club like that are interested in me," he told Corriere dello Sport. "But I have only heard about it from the newspapers.

"At the moment I'm only thinking about relaxing by the seaside with my family.

"I've just signed a new contract and I'd like to stay at Roma."

Roma reportedly refused a 22 million euro offer from United last summer for Vucinic but, knowing they have to sell to buy, could accept 25 million for the 25-year-old.

Manchester United Line Up Bids for Samuel Eto'o and Antonio Valencia

Manchester United are lining up a move to take Samuel Eto’o to Old Trafford as they prepare to fill the void left by Cristiano Ronaldo’s impending departure.

Sir Alex Ferguson is eager to find a replacement for the Portugal forward as soon as possible and has made a firm inquiry about Eto’o. The United manager is confident of getting the Barcelona forward and knows that he needs to bolster his roster of strikers if Carlos Tévez leaves the club this summer.

Eto’o is one of Manchester City’s leading summer transfer targets, but United look like beating their rivals to the Cameroon player’s signature.

A £17 million deal for Antonio Valencia, the Wigan Athletic and Ecuador winger, is also in place and should be concluded shortly.

Eto’o, aged 28, had a fine season at Barcelona, scoring 34 goals to help his team to an unprecedented Spanish league, cup and Champions League treble. He was on target in the 2-0 victory over United in the Champions League final in Rome last month.

He has only a year remaining on his contract, but while Barcelona would like to keep him, they would prefer to cash in now rather than lose him for nothing at the end of next season.

City had offered up to £25 million for Eto’o and were prepared to make him the highest-paid player in the Premier League, but United would hope to secure a deal for less.

Ferguson’s interest in Valencia was confirmed yesterday by Dave Whelan, the Wigan owner, who said that United had monitored the player throughout the season.

The price would leave Ferguson with £63 million left over from the £80 million transfer fee paid by Real Madrid for Ronaldo, which is being delivered in annual instalments of £20 million. A spokesman for the Glazer family, United’s owners, implied yesterday that the Scot would be free to spend that money on any new players he wishes to sign.

Whelan did not speak like a man who would be obstructive in negotiations over Valencia either. “United have been in touch over Antonio for the past two or three months, actually putting cash on the table,” he said. “I think they were waiting to see if Ronaldo went to Real, which has happened, so we will sit down now.”

The sale of Ronaldo was Ferguson’s decision and not a result of the club’s enormous debt, according to a spokesman for the Glazer family. “The idea that Manchester United are motivated by a debt burden is just not true,” he said. “Cristiano Ronaldo decided, after six years, it was time to move on and the manager said, ‘OK.’ Sir Alex Ferguson is in total control of his squad. He is empowered to make whatever decisions he thinks are in the best interests of Manchester United.

“Only the paranoia of some supporters would lead you to believe the owners are not going to continue investing in the team. A substantial number of world-class players have been brought to the club in the past few years and that will still be the case.”

United, whose attacking strength could shrink farther given the uncertainty over Tévez’s future, have also been linked with Franck Ribéry and Karim Benzema, but their respective clubs are standing firm.

Uli Hoeness, the Bayern Munich general manager, says that only a “crazy” offer would tempt them to sell Ribéry, the France playmaker, while Jean-Michel Aulas, the Lyons president, claims that Benzema, the France striker, will stay at the club at least until next summer.

“We spoke a lot and it’s true that there are many clubs after him,” Aulas said. “We interrogated his agent and are not under the impression that he will leave in the short term.”

Gordon Taylor, the Professional Footballers’ Association chief executive, suggested that United might have made more effort to retain Wayne Rooney had he been in Ronaldo’s position.

“As an Englishman, if I was asked to make a choice I would have Wayne,” he said. “Although Ronaldo has become more of a team player, there was a significant individual element to the way he played. Wayne has not been far away from being one of the best players in the world for a long time.”
